5. Research & Academic Publications

• Trainees are expected to identify a research problem, design a study, collect and analyze data, and interpret findings under the mentorship of an assigned faculty guide.

• Trainees are encouraged to submit manuscripts to peer-reviewed indexed journals, and the department provides editorial support to enhance publication prospects.

• A mandatory Dissertation, based on original research work conducted during the DNB tenure, must be submitted to the National Board of Examinations as a prerequisite to appearing in the final DNB examinations. The Dissertation is evaluated by NBE-appointed examiners and must demonstrate scientific rigor, ethical compliance, and relevance to clinical practice. The department's research committee oversees the progress of each trainee's research work through periodic reviews.

6. Clinical & Surgical Training

ISIC Multispeciality Hospital is a high-volume tertiary care centre that provides trainees with exposure to a wide range of orthopaedic sub-specialties. The clinical training environment is designed to progressively build the trainee's competence from basic to advanced surgical procedures.

• Trauma & Fracture Management: Comprehensive exposure to the management of all types of fractures including periarticular, intra-articular, poly-trauma, and pediatric fractures using contemporary implants and fixation systems.
• Joint Replacement Surgery: Training in primary and revision total hip and knee arthroplasty, unicondylar knee replacement, and shoulder arthroplasty.
• Arthroscopy & Sports Medicine: Exposure to diagnostic and therapeutic arthroscopy of the knee, shoulder, and ankle; management of ligamentous injuries, meniscal pathology, and rotator cuff tears.
• Spine Surgery: Training in degenerative and traumatic spine conditions, including discectomy, laminectomy, spinal instrumentation, and deformity correction.
• Paediatric Orthopaedics: Management of developmental dysplasia of the hip, clubfoot, limb length discrepancy, and other paediatric musculoskeletal conditions.
• Oncology: Exposure to limb salvage surgeries, tumour resection, and reconstruction in collaboration with the oncology unit.
• Hand & Microsurgery: Basic training in hand trauma, tendon repairs, nerve injuries, and replantation procedures. Trainees are exposed to both emergency and elective surgical procedures, with progressive autonomy granted under close supervision as competence is demonstrated. The department operates dedicated orthopaedic operating theatres with state-of-the-art imaging, navigation systems, and implant libraries.

7. Examination & Assessment

The DNB Orthopaedic Surgery programme follows the examination and assessment framework laid down by the National Board of Examinations. Assessment is continuous and multi-modal:

• Log Books: Trainees maintain detailed log books documenting all clinical encounters, surgical procedures, and academic activities throughout the training period.
